SEO vs AEO vs GEO: what is the difference?

Three acronyms, one goal: being the business people find when they search or ask. Here is what each one means, in plain English, for a business in Dubai.

Short answer: SEO vs AEO vs GEO is a question of where you want to show up. SEO (search engine optimisation) gets your pages ranked in Google's list of links. AEO (answer engine optimisation) gets your content chosen as the direct answer. GEO (generative engine optimisation) gets your business named inside AI answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.

All three rest on the same foundation: a fast site that search engines can crawl, with clear and trustworthy facts. The difference is what the searcher sees at the end, and what extra work it takes to be part of it.

What is SEO?

SEO is the work of helping search engines find, understand and rank your pages, so you appear in the classic list of results. It covers technical health, content that matches what people search, and signals that other sites trust you.

Google's own SEO Starter Guide is still the best plain-language summary. Make pages easy to crawl. Write titles and headings that describe the page. Link your pages together sensibly. Create content that is genuinely useful.

For a Dubai business, SEO also means local search. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that prominence includes links and reviews (Google Business Profile Help).

What is AEO?

AEO is the work of shaping your content so a search engine or voice assistant can lift a clear answer straight from it. The goal is to be the featured snippet, the "People also ask" answer or the line a voice assistant reads out.

AEO is mostly about structure. You phrase headings as the real questions customers ask. You answer each one in the first sentence or two below it. Then you add the detail. Lists, steps and short paragraphs make answers easier to extract.

One honest caveat: FAQ markup is not the shortcut it used to be. Since August 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results mainly for well-known government and health websites (Google Search Central Blog). The markup is still valid and still helps machines read your page. It just rarely creates the expandable result most businesses hope for.

What is GEO?

GEO is the work of making your business easy for AI assistants to find, understand, trust and cite when they write an answer. Instead of ranking a link, the AI names businesses and summarises them in its own words.

The term comes from a 2023 research paper by researchers at Princeton University and IIT Delhi, presented at the KDD 2024 conference (Aggarwal et al.). They tested content changes across 10,000 queries. Adding citations, quotations and statistics improved a source's visibility in AI answers by up to 40%. Keyword stuffing, the old SEO habit, did not help.

GEO reaches beyond your website. AI assistants compare what you say about yourself with what other sites say about you. Consistent facts across your site, your Google Business Profile, directories and press coverage make you easier to trust and to recommend.

How do SEO, AEO and GEO overlap?

They overlap far more than the acronyms suggest. Google says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page must simply be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet (Google Search Central).

That means good SEO is the entry ticket for Google's AI features. Good AEO makes your answers easy to quote. GEO adds the layer that the other two often skip: a consistent identity, proof from other sites and regular checks on what AI tools actually say.

  • Shared: crawlable pages, fast loading, clear headings, helpful content, accurate structured data.
  • Stronger in AEO: question-led headings and short, direct answers.
  • Stronger in GEO: entity consistency, mentions on other trusted sites, cited facts and AI answer monitoring.

What makes GEO different from SEO?

The biggest difference is that an AI answer blends several sources into one reply, so being "number one" is not the goal. Being one of the sources the AI trusts and agrees with is.

Google explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode may run a "query fan-out", issuing several related searches to build one response (Google Search Central). ChatGPT search works in a similar way. OpenAI says it may send more specific follow-up queries to search providers. It may also use your approximate location to rewrite a local question (OpenAI Help Center).

For a business in Dubai, that matters. Someone asking for "a branding studio near me" in Dubai may get an answer built from searches the AI ran on their behalf. If your facts are vague or inconsistent across those searches, you are easy to leave out.

Which should a Dubai business start with?

Start with SEO foundations and your Google Business Profile, then add answer-first content, then build the GEO layer. Each step makes the next one work better, and the early steps are the cheapest to get right.

  1. Technical basics. Fast pages, a sitemap in Search Console, no accidental blocks on Googlebot or AI crawlers.
  2. Clear facts. One description of who you are, where you are and what you do, used everywhere.
  3. Answer-first pages. Each service page answers the questions customers really ask.
  4. Proof elsewhere. Real reviews, directory listings, partner mentions and press.
  5. Regular checks. Ask the main AI assistants your key questions every month and note who they name.

What should you ignore?

Ignore anyone selling a secret trick. The research and the platforms point the same way: clear, honest, well-sourced content on a site that machines can read, backed by a real reputation.

A few common myths, checked against the sources:

  • "You need an llms.txt file to appear in AI." It is a useful proposed standard, and we publish one. But Google says you do not need new machine-readable files or AI text files to appear in its AI features.
  • "Fifty FAQs will get you into AI answers." Volume is not the point. Google's helpful content guidance asks whether content is made for people first.
  • "Repeat your keyword everywhere." The GEO study found keyword stuffing did not improve visibility in AI answers.

How do you measure SEO, AEO and GEO?

Measure SEO and AEO in Google Search Console, and measure GEO by testing real questions in the AI assistants themselves. There is no official GEO dashboard yet, so be wary of tools that claim precise AI rankings.

Google includes clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the normal "Web" search data in Search Console. For GEO, keep a fixed list of questions your customers ask. Run them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google every month. Record which businesses are named and whether the facts about you are right.

Key takeaways

  • SEO ranks your pages, AEO makes your answers quotable, GEO gets your business named in AI answers.
  • Google says AI features need no special markup: indexed, snippet-eligible pages are the entry ticket.
  • Research shows citations, quotes and real statistics help AI visibility; keyword stuffing does not.
  • GEO adds consistent facts and proof on other trusted sites.

FAQ.

SEO vs AEO vs GEO, answered.

Ask us a question

No. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same foundations as Search, so a page must be indexed and snippet-eligible to be cited. GEO builds on SEO: it adds consistent business facts, proof on other trusted sites and regular checks on what AI assistants say.

AEO shapes your content so search engines and voice assistants can lift a direct answer from it, such as a featured snippet. GEO makes your whole business easy for AI assistants to find, trust and cite, which also depends on what other websites say about you.

Usually not. Most of the work overlaps: technical health, clear content, structured data and a good reputation. It is simpler and more consistent when one team plans all three and reports on them together.

FAQPage markup is still valid and helps machines read your page, but since August 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results mainly for well-known government and health sites. Treat it as clarity, not as a ranking trick.

Make a list of the questions your customers ask, run them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google every month, and record which businesses are named and whether your details are correct. There is no official AI visibility report yet.

Start with technical SEO and a complete Google Business Profile, then write answer-first service pages, then build mentions and reviews on other trusted sites. That order gives SEO, AEO and GEO the same strong base.
