GEO for Dubai businesses: a practical guide

Generative engine optimisation without the hype: five steps any Dubai business can work through, with what the platforms themselves say at each step.

Short answer: GEO for Dubai businesses means making your company easy for AI assistants to find, understand and cite when someone in the UAE asks for a recommendation. In practice it is five jobs: open access for AI crawlers, one consistent set of business facts, answer-first pages, proof on other trusted sites and a monthly check of what AI tools say.

GEO stands for generative engine optimisation. The term comes from a 2023 research paper by Princeton University and IIT Delhi researchers, presented at KDD 2024 (Aggarwal et al.). It treats AI assistants as a new kind of search engine, one that writes answers instead of listing links.

What does GEO mean for a Dubai business?

It means being one of the names an AI assistant gives when a customer asks "who is the best option for this in Dubai?". If you are not mentioned, you are not considered, however good your website looks.

Dubai adds its own twists. Customers search in English and Arabic. Many businesses serve the whole UAE or the wider region. Competition for every service is intense, and many established firms have years of reviews and press behind them. GEO is how a newer or smaller business makes sure its strengths are visible to the machines doing the shortlisting.

Step 1: Can AI crawlers reach your website?

Check robots.txt and your CDN or firewall first. If an assistant's crawler cannot read your pages, nothing else in this guide matters for that assistant.

OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI crawlers). Perplexity asks site owners to allow PerplexityBot, including in firewall rules (Perplexity crawlers). Google-Extended controls whether your content may be used for Gemini training and grounding, and Google says it does not affect your inclusion in Google Search (Google crawlers).

We learned this first-hand. While setting up storytellers.ae, our own CDN's bot protection was blocking some AI crawlers even though robots.txt allowed them. Changing the CDN's AI bot settings fixed it. Test with the real crawlers' user agents, not just your browser.

Step 2: Is your business described the same way everywhere?

AI assistants trust facts that agree across sources. Write one fact sheet and reuse it word for word on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Instagram and directory listings.

  • Name: exactly as it appears on your signage and invoices.
  • One-line description: what you do, for whom, and where.
  • Location: Dubai, plus the areas or countries you serve.
  • Services: the same list and wording everywhere.
  • People: founders and their roles.
  • Contacts: one phone number, one email, one website.

Then add Organization structured data to your website. Google's Organization markup guide supports properties such as name, logo, contact details and sameAs links to your official profiles. The markup must match what visitors can see on the page.

Step 3: Do your pages answer real customer questions?

Write pages that answer the questions customers actually ask, with the answer in the first sentence or two. AI assistants and Google's AI features lift clear, direct answers far more easily than marketing copy.

Google says its AI features use the same foundations as Search: pages must be indexed and eligible for a snippet (Google Search Central). Beyond that, the GEO study found that citing sources and adding real statistics improved visibility in AI answers by up to 40%. Keyword stuffing did not help.

  • Use question headings that match real searches.
  • Answer in 40 to 60 words, then explain.
  • Cite official or independent sources for any claim.
  • State concrete facts: what is included, how long it takes, who it is for.
  • Never invent numbers, clients or testimonials.

Step 4: Do other trusted sites mention you?

AI assistants check what others say about you, not just what you say. Reviews, directory profiles, partner pages and press coverage all count as corroboration.

Start with Google Business Profile, because Google's local results lean on relevance, distance and prominence, including reviews and links (Google Business Profile Help). Follow Google's profile guidelines closely. For example, a virtual office address is not eligible, and service-area businesses should hide their address and set a service area instead.

Then build steadily: listings on reputable industry directories, credits on client and partner websites, interviews, podcasts and guest articles. Quality beats quantity. Ten real mentions on respected sites are worth more than a hundred thin directory entries.

Step 5: How do you track GEO results?

Keep a fixed list of 20 to 50 questions your customers ask, and run them every month in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google. Record who is named, which sources are cited and whether your details are correct.

Alongside that, watch Google Search Console, where Google counts AI Overview and AI Mode clicks in the normal web search data. In your analytics, look for visits referred from AI tools. Over a few months, the pattern tells you which steps are working.

Does GEO work for Arabic and English audiences?

Yes, but each language needs its own clear content. If your customers search in Arabic, publish your key facts and service pages in Arabic too, and keep the facts identical across both versions.

Use proper hreflang tags so search engines know which page serves which language. Make sure your business name is written consistently in each script on every profile.

Which GEO tactics should Dubai businesses avoid?

Avoid anything that fakes authority. AI systems and search engines increasingly cross-check sources, and shortcuts tend to backfire.

  • Mass AI-written pages. Google's spam policies name "scaled content abuse", including using AI tools to generate many pages without adding value (Google spam policies).
  • Keyword stuffing. The GEO study found it did not improve AI visibility.
  • Fake or bought reviews. They break platform rules and destroy trust when found.
  • Inconsistent details. Different names, numbers or addresses confuse every system.

Key takeaways

  • GEO for Dubai businesses starts with letting AI crawlers in, including through your CDN.
  • One fact sheet, used everywhere, is the core of a strong AI identity.
  • Answer-first pages with real sources get cited; keyword stuffing does not.
  • Reviews and mentions on trusted sites are the proof AI looks for.

GEO, or generative engine optimisation, is the work of making your business easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to find, understand and cite when they answer a question.

Yes, especially for a newer business. The GEO research found lower-ranked sources benefited most from clear, well-sourced content. Most GEO steps, such as consistent facts and a complete Google Business Profile, cost time rather than money.

It varies. OpenAI says robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to affect ChatGPT search, while Google notes recrawling can take days to months. Building reviews and mentions on other sites is ongoing work measured in months.

It is one of the strongest signals for local recommendations, because Gemini and Google AI Overviews draw on Google Search and Maps data. Follow Google's guidelines: virtual offices are not eligible, and service-area businesses should hide their address.

If you want AI assistants to use your content, yes. GPTBot covers training for OpenAI models, OAI-SearchBot covers ChatGPT search, and Google-Extended covers Gemini training and grounding. Google says Google-Extended does not affect Google Search rankings.

Yes. Publish your key facts and service pages in Arabic as well as English, keep the facts identical in both, use hreflang tags, and write your business name consistently in each script on every profile.
