Explainer video vs brand film: pick the job before the length

An explainer answers "how does it work?" A brand film answers "why should I care?" Ask for "a video" and you may get the wrong one.

Short answer: in the explainer video vs brand film choice, the job decides. An explainer video shows how something works: the steps, the screens, the result. A brand film shows why someone should care, before the mechanism matters. Choose an explainer when people already want what you offer but do not understand how to use or buy it. Choose a brand film when people do not yet know why your business matters. Pick the job before you talk about length or style.

Many buyers in Dubai ask a studio for "a video" and receive whichever format the studio likes making. Studio502, a Dubai video studio, says it scripts every video before touching a camera, and that the script, not the gear, is what sells. The first line of that script depends on which of these two jobs the video has. Our guide to brand film in Dubai covers that format in depth. This page is only the comparison.

What is the difference between an explainer and a brand film?

An explainer teaches how something works. A brand film makes people care why the business exists. The question, the viewer and the success test all differ.

  • The question. An explainer answers "how does it work?" A brand film answers "why does this business exist, and why should I care?"
  • The viewer's state. An explainer viewer is already interested and wants clarity. A brand film viewer may not have heard of you yet.
  • The content. An explainer uses steps, screens, diagrams or a demonstration. A brand film uses people, places and a story.
  • The success test. After an explainer, the viewer can describe how to use the product. After a brand film, the viewer can repeat the one claim you stand for.
  • The shelf life. An explainer changes when the product changes. A brand film lasts as long as the brand's claim holds.

Which one should you make?

Start from the problem you see today, not the format you like.

  1. Support teams answer the same "how do I…" questions every week. Make an explainer.
  2. Visitors land on the site and leave without understanding the offer. Start with an explainer for the product page, and check whether the homepage story is clear.
  3. People understand the product but do not choose you over others. That is a brand problem. Make a brand film.
  4. You are launching a new business or rebrand. Brand film first, explainers as the product pages are built.

What happens when the two are mixed?

A video that tries to inspire and instruct at once usually does neither.

The emotional opening delays the steps an interested viewer wants. The steps interrupt the story a new viewer was starting to feel. If you need both, make two videos and put each on the page where its viewer arrives: the brand film on the homepage, the explainer on the product or help page.

How do you brief an explainer well?

Write the steps before the script, and keep each video to one task.

  • List the steps first. Write the exact sequence a new user follows. The video follows it, in order.
  • Use the real interface or product. If the screens change soon, wait, or plan an easy update.
  • Keep one task per video. Three short explainers beat one long one that covers everything.
  • Describe what is on screen. If the meaning is only visual, W3C's WCAG 2.2 guidance on audio description asks for audio description of prerecorded video, so the narration should say what the viewer is seeing.

How do you brief a brand film well?

Start with one claim in one sentence, the person who can say it, and the languages it must work in. Our guide on how to brief a brand film walks through that brief step by step.

If the film is shot on location in Dubai, the Dubai Film and TV Commission says script approval comes before a filming permit and takes up to 25 business days, so up to 5 weeks of working days. Explainers recorded from screens usually avoid that step. Short vertical cuts of either format can run up to 3 minutes as YouTube Shorts (YouTube Help).

What about Arabic and English?

Both formats need to work for the audience you serve.

Arabic is the official language of the UAE and English is widely used in business (UAE fact sheet). For explainers, on-screen text and interface labels may need an Arabic version, not just subtitles. For both formats, plan captions: W3C's WCAG 2.2 guidance asks for captions on prerecorded audio, and W3C WAI explains transcripts and other accessible media needs.

Where should each video live?

Each video should have a page whose main purpose is that video. Google's video SEO guidance says a dedicated watch page helps a video become eligible for video features in Search. Put the explainer on the product or help page it supports, and give the brand film its own page linked from the homepage.

Key takeaways

  • An explainer shows how something works. A brand film shows why to care.
  • Diagnose first: confusion about use means an explainer; indifference about the brand means a brand film.
  • Do not mix the two in one video. Make two, each on the page where its viewer arrives.
  • Caption both, describe visual steps in the narration, and give each video its own watch page.

Ask us a question

An explainer video shows how a product or service works, step by step. A brand film tells the story of why the business exists and why someone should care, before the details matter.

Make an explainer when people want your product but do not understand how it works. Make a brand film when people do not yet know why your business matters or why to choose you.

It usually does neither job well. The story delays the steps, and the steps interrupt the story. Make two videos and place each where its viewer arrives.

W3C accessibility guidance asks for audio description of prerecorded video where meaning is only visual. A simple fix is narration that says what is on screen.

Often. Arabic is the official language of the UAE. For explainers, on-screen text and interface labels may need an Arabic version, not only subtitles.

On the product or help page it supports, as a page whose main purpose is that video where possible. Google says a dedicated watch page helps a video qualify for video features.
