Brand film Dubai: how to make a film people remember
What a brand film is, why story comes first, and the practical steps to make one in Dubai that people actually watch to the end.
Short answer: a brand film tells the story of why your business exists and what it stands for, in a way people feel as well as understand. It is not a list of services and not a sales pitch. In Dubai, make it with one clear idea, a script approved before filming, the right permits and consents, licensed music, and Arabic and English subtitles.
This guide explains what a brand film is, how it differs from other company videos, and how to make one step by step. It is for founders and marketing teams planning a brand film Dubai audiences will remember, with a point of view, not just beautiful footage.
What is a brand film?
A brand film is a short film about a brand's purpose, values or point of view. It shows what the business believes and why that matters to the audience. Products and services may appear, but they support the story rather than lead it.
The best brand films leave viewers with a feeling and a reason to remember the name. They are often used on a homepage, at a launch event, at the start of a pitch, or as the first chapter of a campaign.
How is a brand film different from a corporate video or an advert?
All three are useful, but they do different jobs. Mixing them in one film usually weakens all three.
- Brand film: answers "why do you exist?" Its goal is meaning and memory.
- Corporate video: answers "what do you do and how?" Its goal is understanding and trust.
- Advert: answers "why buy this now?" Its goal is a specific action within a set period.
If you need to explain your services in detail, make a corporate video as well. Our corporate video Dubai guide covers that process.
Why does a brand film need a story first?
Because good footage is easy to find and a good idea is not. A film made of skyline shots and slow motion with a logo at the end looks like many others. A film built on your brand story looks like only you.
Start by writing the idea in one sentence: what should the viewer feel, think and do when the film ends? Every scene should serve that sentence. A simple story structure helps:
- The world: the situation or tension your audience knows.
- The turn: the insight, belief or person that changes how we see it.
- The proof: real moments that show the belief in action.
- The reveal: the brand, and the one line people should remember.
What should a brand film brief include?
A clear brief saves rounds of changes later. Include these points in any brand film Dubai brief:
- Your brand strategy: audience, positioning, values and personality.
- The one-sentence idea, or the question you want the film to answer.
- Where the film will live, and which shorter cuts you need.
- The languages and markets it must work in.
- Real people, places or projects that could appear on camera.
- Who approves the script and the edit, and your timeline.
- Films you admire, and why, so the team understands your taste.
How do you make a brand film step by step?
- Find the story. Interview founders, staff and customers to find the truth worth telling.
- Write the script. Voice-over, dialogue, scenes and timing, approved before any filming.
- Design the look. Storyboard, mood, colour and music direction that fit your brand identity.
- Prepare the shoot. Casting, locations, permits, consents, crew and schedule.
- Film. Capture the story scenes, plus extra moments for short cut-downs.
- Edit. Shape the story, then add colour, sound design, music and graphics.
- Finish for every channel. Master film, vertical and square cuts, subtitles and thumbnails.
What rules apply to filming a brand film in Dubai?
Treat a brand film Dubai shoot like any professional production. The Dubai Film and TV Commission (DFTC) is the sole body authorised to license media filming in Dubai, including free zones, under Executive Council Resolution No. 50 of 2014, and location owners must approve filming at their sites.
For film and television productions, the DFTC says script approval must come before the filming permit, can take up to 25 business days, and requires a full script in Arabic for Arabic productions or English for others. Plan your schedule around it.
Get signed consent from everyone who appears on camera. Article 44 of Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021 makes it an offence to use technology to invade someone's privacy without consent, including photographing people in public or private places. This is general guidance, not legal advice.
Who owns the music and footage in a brand film?
Settle this in writing before production starts. Copyright covers films and music, as WIPO explains, so you need the right to use every track, clip, font and image in the film.
- License music for every channel and market where the film will appear.
- Check whether stock footage licences cover advertising use.
- Agree who owns the final film and the raw footage.
- Keep all licences and release forms with the project files.
How do you share a brand film so people see it?
A brand film Dubai viewers cannot follow is a wasted film. Make sure everyone can follow the story. Arabic is the official language of the UAE and English is widely used, according to the UAE government fact sheet, so most Dubai brand films need subtitles in both.
Accessibility matters too. WCAG 2.2 asks for captions on prerecorded video (WCAG 1.2.2) and audio description of important visual information (WCAG 1.2.5). Brand films often tell their story with images alone, so describe key moments for people who cannot see them. The W3C also recommends a transcript.
To help people find the film in search, give it its own watch page, as Google recommends, and add VideoObject structured data (Google). Then share short cuts on social media that lead back to the full film.
On YouTube, two details help. Square or vertical videos up to 3 minutes long are classified as Shorts, so upload the master film in a wider format such as 16:9 if you want it treated as a full-length video (YouTube Help). You can also add chapters: start the first timestamp at 00:00, list at least three, and keep each chapter at least 10 seconds long (YouTube Help).
Key takeaways
- A brand film explains why you exist. Keep service detail for a corporate video.
- Write the idea in one sentence, then make every scene serve it.
- Plan permits, consents and music licences before the shoot.
- Deliver Arabic and English subtitles, audio description and a watch page.
